The Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada's (ORNAC) Professional Standards, Guidelines and Position Statements For Perioperative Registered Nursing Practice, 8^th ed, Module 1 "ORNAC Beliefs and Professional Standards" revised in June 2007 now includes six (6) competency statements for the RNFA (Appendix A, Pages 63-74).

The Canadian RNFA competency statements were adapted from AORN with permission from AORN. The original AORN statements can be found in the October 2002 issue of AORN, where the RN First Assistant Specialty Assembly Competency Task Force published RN First Assistant Competencies.

"The document consists of six (6) competency statements with accompanying measurable criteria and practice examples. The RNFA competencies reflect the greater depth and breath of knowledge and clinical skills necessary for the perioperative nurse to function in the expanded role of the first assistant."
